For many applicants, one of the first questions is simple: how much does it cost to protect an industrial design in Armenia?
This is especially important for companies planning to launch a new product, update a product line, or enter export markets. Before filing an application, it is important to understand not only the legal procedure, but also the overall project budget.
The detailed filing and examination procedure is described in the article “Industrial Design Registration in Armenia: A Practical Guide for Applicants.”
In this publication, we focus specifically on costs and examine what makes up the cost of industrial design registration (patenting) in Armenia, which expenses are mandatory, and which depend on the applicant’s particular circumstances.
What Makes Up the Cost
As a rule, expenses consist of several elements:
• official government fees;
• preparation and filing of the application;
• preparation of design representations;
• services of a patent attorney or representative;
• additional costs in case of objections or office actions;
• subsequent maintenance fees to keep the patent in force.
The final cost depends on whether the applicant files independently or uses professional assistance.
1. Official Government Fees
The main part of mandatory expenses is related to payment of official fees to the competent intellectual property authority of Armenia.
Usually, fees include:
• filing of the application;
• examination of the application;
• grant of the patent;
• maintenance of the patent for subsequent periods.
Fee amounts may change, therefore it is advisable to verify the current tariffs before filing.
1.1 Official Fees: Basic Example for a Legal Entity
Below is an example for an application filed by a legal entity with more than 100 employees.
For the first industrial design:
• filing fee — AMD 20,000
• substantive examination fee — AMD 30,000
Total at the initial stage: AMD 50,000
For the second and each subsequent design variant in the same application:
• filing fee — AMD 8,000
• substantive examination fee — AMD 20,000
This makes multiple applications economically efficient in many cases.
After the Decision to Grant the Patent
If the examination results in a positive decision, the following fees are payable:
• patent grant fee — AMD 15,000
• maintenance fee for the first 5 years — AMD 60,000
Total after approval: AMD 75,000
Example of Total Cost for One Design
For one industrial design (without additional variants):
Before grant:
• AMD 20,000
• AMD 30,000
After positive decision:
• AMD 15,000
• AMD 60,000
Total amount: AMD 125,000
(excluding representative fees and preparation of materials)
1.2 Fee Reductions
It should be noted that Armenian legislation provides substantial reductions for certain official fees.
For individual applicants, as well as legal entities with up to 25 employees, a 75% reduction applies to fees for:
• filing the application;
• patent grant;
• patent maintenance.
For legal entities with 25 to 100 employees, a 50% reduction applies to the relevant fees.
This system makes industrial design patenting especially accessible for startups and small and medium-sized businesses.
2. Preparation of the Application
Even in a relatively straightforward procedure, the quality of the application is highly important.
Preparation usually includes:
• analysis of the subject matter to be protected;
• determination of filing strategy;
• preparation of the document package;
• correct identification of the author and applicant;
• preparation of a description (if necessary);
• verification of formal requirements.
Mistakes at this stage may lead to delays, additional expenses, or refusal.
3. Design Representations
For industrial designs, images are crucial because they define the scope of legal protection.
Sometimes this requires:
• professional photography of the product;
• graphic processing of images;
• preparation of front, side, top and perspective views;
• unification of background and file quality.
If the representations are of poor quality, even a granted patent may be weak in practical terms.
4. Representative Services
Foreign applicants usually use a local representative. For Armenian applicants, this may also be beneficial where timing, accuracy and risk reduction are important.
Professional support may include:
• full management of the procedure;
• correspondence with the authority;
• responses to office actions;
• publication follow-up;
• monitoring of fee payment deadlines.
What Determines the Final Cost
The cost may vary depending on the following factors:
Number of Design Variants
If several variants need protection, expenses may increase.
Number of Images
Complex objects require a more detailed set of representations.
Third-Party Objections
If objections are filed after publication, additional work may be required.
Urgency of the Project
If the client needs immediate filing, this may also affect the organization of work.
How to Reduce Costs Without Losing Quality
Applicants are advised to:
• prepare quality images in advance;
• determine which variants truly need protection;
• file before public disclosure;
• plan foreign markets in advance;
• seek consultation before filing rather than after problems arise.
Why the Cheapest Option Is Not Always the Best
Many applicants focus only on price. However, in industrial design matters, what matters is not only filing an application, but the quality of future protection.
A poorly prepared application may result in:
• competitors easily designing around the patent;
• objections from the examiner;
• overly narrow protection;
• the need to refile and pay again.
Conclusion
The cost of industrial design registration in Armenia consists of more than official fees alone. The quality of preparation, design representations, protection strategy and professional support are equally important.
A properly prepared application is often more cost-effective than trying to save money at key stages.
